Welcome to dianekerner.com, home base for the book My Own Medicine and a resource for people living with chronic illness. Here you will find help, hope and inspiration for living with your illness rather than becomming one of the "living dead" - people who have put their lives on hold or dropped out of life altogether because they don't know how to go on or even just get by in a world that caters to people with drive, success, fitness, good health and good looks.

The articles on this site contain specific information on how to deal with money issues, tend to the special needs of the body, clean up your environment to support your best health and nurture and support your mind and spirit - all in ways that are readily available and within your control. You will find the highly quoted and requested chapter on detoxifying your environment to prevent biological reactions that compound your symptoms taken straight from the pages of My Own Medicine.

This is the stuff that your health care practitioner rarely has the time or resources to help you with. They are the experts on their treatments and potions, but you are the expert on you and on how your illness manifests for you. The suggestions on these pages will enhance their work while allowing you to take some control and have a more significant impact on your health and quality of life. You do not have to surrender your happiness to your illness and you don't have to get a PhD or have lots of money to follow the suggestions here. Taking whatever control you can enlivens, encourages and restores precious functions.

It's easy to be passive and idle when we are "victims" of ill health. After all, that is exactly what we are taught to do when we get sick. And you must take into account how you feel physically. But you can't afford to be passive when your illness is chronic. You can show up for yourself in a powerful way in spite of drained energy, aches, chills and cognitive challenges.

You can't fight chronic illness. You can't just long for the past or live in a future you can only dream for yourself. What's here right now is you with your illness and that, my friend, just is.

The strategies outlined on this Web site and in My Own Medicine guide you into a deeper level of healing and happiness with tools to manage and counteract your symptoms and the secondary stress your medical condition can create. This information is based on my book My Own Medicine and my experience with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, which I contracted in 1986. Let my own medicine help you to discover your own medicine and create a new and better life for yourself.
